Service Description

This tour brings home the extraordinary entertainment history of Douglas in the Victorian era when stars of the musical hall, stage and dance halls came to Douglas to entertain the masses during the boom years of the tourist industry. Many cocked a snoop at the conventions of the day and pushed the limits of acceptability to keep the crowds well entertained. Controversial as they were, their success cannot be denied. The tour goes on to visit Hutchinson Square where WW2 internees achieved high art, philosophical debate and University studies whilst confined behind barbed wire as internees. Finally the tour visits the area where the first ever holiday camp was created by the Cunningham family and entertained thousands of men and boys often escaping poverty and slum conditions in the cities of the North West. Your tour starts at the War Memorial on Harris Promenade, Douglas and ends on Queen's Promenade. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a short steep hill and about 1.5 miles walking on paved surfaces.
